Looks like Jason Momoa is heading back to the Overworld sooner rather than later.

The actor, who played champion gamer Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison in A Minecraft Movie, has officially confirmed that the sequel is gearing up to start production — and he sounds very into it. While appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Momoa casually dropped the update fans have been waiting for.

“Very soon. Dude. Bro, end of April. They’re in it,” Momoa said, before adding something even more encouraging: he loved the script. Like, genuinely loved it. “The script is even better. It’s so good, I was laughing out loud. I haven’t laughed out loud in a very long time at a script. I was perplexed on the first script — this one I’m laughing out loud.”

That’s a pretty strong endorsement, especially considering how divisive video game adaptations can be.

As previously reported, A Minecraft Movie 2 will once again be directed by Jared Hess, with a script from Hess and Chris Galletta. Warner Bros. already has its sights set on a July 23, 2027 release date, which shows just how confident the studio is in returning to the blocky universe.

That confidence makes sense. The first Minecraft movie turned into a massive box office success when it launched in April, becoming Warner Bros.’ third-largest opening of all time. Unsurprisingly, sequel talks kicked into high gear almost immediately.

Hess has been openly enthusiastic about returning, telling Deadline that the sequel gives them a chance to explore parts of the game they didn’t get to touch the first time around. “It’s such an expansive world,” he said, noting that there were plenty of ideas left on the table. He also teased that fan reactions to the end-credits scene helped fuel the momentum.

And speaking of that tease: yes, Alex is officially coming. After hinting at the character in the first movie’s final moments, Hess confirmed that Minecraft’s iconic duo will be front and center. “It’s Steve (Jack Black) and Alex,” he said. “That’s the one that we will be bringing to the table without a doubt.”

Between Momoa’s excitement, a returning creative team, and deeper dives into the game’s lore, A Minecraft Movie 2 sounds like it’s shaping up to be bigger, funnier, and more confident — exactly what you want from a sequel built one block at a time.
