Teresa Palmer Joins Ryan Hurst In Prime Video’s ‘God Of War’
Prime Video’s God of War series is slowly but steadily turning into something really exciting, and the latest casting news only adds to that momentum. Teresa Palmer (A Discovery of Witches, Warm Bodies) has joined the highly anticipated live-action adaptation, stepping into the role of Phoebe/Sif, Thor’s wife and the goddess of family.
If you’ve played the recent God of War games, this casting choice should immediately click. Palmer has always been strong at playing emotionally grounded characters, and that feels especially important for a show that’s leaning hard into grief, family, and legacy — not just epic battles and angry gods with axes.
She joins Ryan Hurst, who was recently announced as Kratos, the haunted Spartan warrior at the center of the franchise. The series comes from Ronald D. Moore (Outlander, For All Mankind), which is honestly one of the biggest reasons to stay optimistic here. Moore knows how to adapt beloved material while still digging deep into character, and God of War absolutely lives or dies on that balance.
The show has already landed a two-season order, with pre-production underway in Vancouver and casting now fully in motion. Story-wise, the series will follow Kratos and his young son Atreus as they travel to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ wife, Faye. Along the way, it becomes a deeply personal father-and-son story, with Kratos trying to teach Atreus how to be a god, while Atreus challenges his father to be more human. If that emotional core isn’t handled well, the whole thing falls apart — which is why Palmer’s presence as Sif could be more important than it initially seems.
Sif, in Norse mythology, is closely tied to themes of family, loyalty, and emotional stability, making her a fascinating counterpoint to the chaos and violence surrounding characters like Kratos and Thor. Palmer feels like a smart choice to bring some warmth and humanity into a world that can otherwise skew brutally bleak.
Behind the camera, the project is stacked. God of War is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, alongside PlayStation Productions. Executive producers include Cory Barlog (the creative force behind the modern games), Maril Davis, and several veterans of prestige television. Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys) is set to direct the first two episodes, which is another reassuring sign that Amazon is aiming high.
Between Ryan Hurst’s imposing take on Kratos and Teresa Palmer’s emotionally rich casting as Sif, God of War is shaping up to be less about nonstop spectacle and more about character-driven mythmaking. And honestly, that’s exactly what this franchise needs to work in live action.
