Kiernan Shipka and Cole Sprouse to Star in Amazon MGM Rom-Com Goodbye Girl
Kiernan Shipka and Cole Sprouse are set to headline Goodbye Girl, a romantic comedy from Amazon MGM Studios and Gulfstream Pictures that begins production this week in New Orleans.
The feature marks the next directing effort from Oran Zegman, following his Paramount+ coming-of-age comedy Honor Society. Shipka stars as Jess, a woman whose unusual profession revolves around ending relationships on behalf of others. When she’s hired by a reluctant bride to break things off with her groom just days before the wedding, the assignment goes off the rails — and Jess unexpectedly finds herself falling for the very man she was sent to leave. Sprouse plays the jilted groom.
The screenplay was written by Danielle Hoover and David Monahan, based on a story they developed with Jessica Elbaum. Gulfstream principals Mike Karz and William Bindley are producing and also provided financing, alongside Dawn Bierschwal and Ryan Lewis of The RAD Lab and Daniel Wagner.
In a joint statement, Karz and Bindley said the project reflects Gulfstream’s commitment to character-driven romantic comedies. “Goodbye Girl is smart, funny and heartfelt,” they said, adding that Shipka and Sprouse bring “charm, wit and emotional honesty” to the leads, while praising Zegman’s confident directorial voice.
Shipka, who currently appears in the fourth season of HBO Max’s Industry, recently starred in Macon Blair’s Sundance-premiering comedy The Shitheads, opposite Dave Franco and O’Shea Jackson Jr. Her recent film credits also include Longlegs, Totally Killer and The Last Showgirl. She is represented by WME, Anonymous Content and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.
Sprouse will next be seen alongside Matthew McConaughey in the crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King, which premiered at last year’s SXSW Film Festival. His previous film work includes Five Feet Apart, Lisa Frankenstein and Moonshot. He is repped by WME, Entertainment 360 and DLA Piper.
