Legendary’s Live-Action “Gundam” Movie Lands at Netflix

Legendary’s long-gestating live-action Gundam feature appears to have landed at Netflix, with the streamer in talks to distribute the high-profile adaptation, sources say.

The project is set to star Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo, with Sweet Tooth filmmaker Jim Mickle attached to direct from his own script. Netflix and Legendary declined to comment.

The film has been developed jointly by Legendary and franchise owner Bandai Namco Filmworks. Mickle is also producing alongside longtime collaborator Linda Moran under their Nightshade banner, while Centineo will produce through his company with partner Enzo Marc.

Story details are being kept under wraps, though the project is positioned as the first theatrical live-action feature set within the Gundam universe. A previous live-action incarnation, the Canadian-produced telefilm G-Saviour, aired in Japan in 1999.

First launched in 1979 with Mobile Suit Gundam, the long-running franchise is regarded as a foundational pillar of the “mecha” genre, which centers on pilots controlling giant mechanized weapons known as mobile suits. Set primarily within the Universal Century timeline, Gundam explores political conflict and warfare following humanity’s expansion into space. The property has since grown into a sprawling multimedia empire encompassing more than 80 animated series and films, as well as a global merchandising business that generates hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

Legendary first announced plans for a Gundam feature in 2021, with Netflix initially involved and Jordan Vogt-Roberts attached to direct following his success with Kong: Skull Island. That iteration ultimately did not move forward, paving the way for the current Mickle-led version.
