Before Apex even hits Netflix later this spring, the streamer is already locking in its next big thriller with director Baltasar Kormákur, and it’s shaping up to be a heavyweight matchup.

Sources say Mark Wahlberg and Riz Ahmed are set to star in The Big Fix, a high-octane thriller inspired by a true story, with Kormákur back in the director’s chair. If that pairing sounds intentional, it is — Wahlberg and Kormákur have history, and Netflix clearly likes what they’re building together.

The story centers on a former Interpol cop who’s now stuck behind a desk at FIFA, only to stumble onto a massive international match-fixing scandal. Instead of letting it slide, he launches a risky, globe-trotting mission to expose the operation. On the other side of the chessboard is a charismatic hustler who teams up with Chinese Triads to rig football games for millions. What follows is a cat-and-mouse thriller that sends both men racing across the world, each convinced they’re one step ahead of the other.

If that sounds like a perfect fit for Wahlberg, that’s because it kind of is. The actor has built a career out of playing determined, hard-charging characters who don’t know when to quit, and his long-standing collaboration with Kormákur — dating back to Contraband and Two Guns — makes this reunion feel like a no-brainer. Their working shorthand has delivered solid, muscular thrillers before, and Netflix is clearly betting they can do it again.

Meanwhile, Riz Ahmed brings a very different energy to the equation. Fresh off a strong year that included major praise for the thriller Relay, Ahmed has consistently proven he thrives in morally complex roles. Pairing his intensity with Wahlberg’s blunt-force determination sets up a compelling contrast — and likely the emotional backbone of the film.

Behind the scenes, the script comes from Guy Bolton and Justin Haythe, with Kormákur producing alongside Peter Chernin and David Ready. Netflix and Chernin Entertainment reportedly circled the project for a while, making it a priority even before Apex wrapped production, which says a lot about the streamer’s confidence in this one.

Bottom line: The Big Fix sounds like classic Netflix thriller territory — international stakes, real-world corruption, and two powerhouse actors on a collision course. If Kormákur delivers the same tension and momentum he’s known for, this could be one of Netflix’s most talked-about thrillers when it lands.
