Nancy Meyers Returning to Direct as Warner Bros. Sets Christmas 2027 Release
Nancy Meyers is officially returning to the director’s chair.
Warner Bros. has set a Christmas Day 2027 theatrical release for Meyers’ next feature, marking her first time directing in more than a decade following 2015’s The Intern. The project, which Meyers also wrote, was taken over by the studio after being placed in turnaround from Netflix in 2023.
Penélope Cruz and Owen Wilson, who were attached in the film’s previous incarnation, remain on board. Oscar winner Kieran Culkin, Jude Law and Emma Mackey are currently in talks to join the ensemble. The film does not yet have a title, and plot details are being kept tightly under wraps; the studio says any previously circulated descriptions are inaccurate.
The project was originally developed at Netflix, where it had drawn significant attention for its scale and starry casting. At that stage, Scarlett Johansson and Michael Fassbender were in discussions to star alongside Cruz and Wilson, and the budget was said to fall in the $130 million to $150 million range, with a substantial portion allocated to above-the-line costs. Netflix ultimately opted not to move forward with the film.
Within days of that decision in March 2023, the project landed at Warner Bros., where the studio has since worked to reconfigure the package at a significantly lower cost. Adam Driver was briefly linked to the project during its transition period before committing to Michael Mann’s Heat 2.
The untitled feature continues Meyers’ long-standing relationship with Warner Bros., where she previously wrote and directed The Intern, and signals a high-profile return for the filmmaker whose romantic comedies have been both commercially successful and culturally enduring.
