Netflix Greenlights “Breakers,” New Series Starring Antony Starr
Netflix has greenlit Breakers, a new scripted series that will star and be executive produced by Starr. The project hails from writer-executive producer Pete Jackson (Somewhere Boy, The Death of Bunny Munro) and Clerkenwell Films, the BBC Studios-backed company behind Baby Reindeer and The End of the F**ing World*. Production is underway in Western Australia and is scheduled to wrap in June 2026.
Also known as Red Bluff, Breakers centers on two American best friends who travel to Australia on a backpacking trip and become entangled in a seemingly idyllic surfing community. Starr plays Brando, the group’s magnetic and enigmatic leader, whose influence begins to reveal darker undercurrents beneath the coastal paradise.
Starr, who is New Zealand-born, executive produces alongside Jackson, as well as Clerkenwell Films’ Gavin O’Grady, Petra Fried and Wim De Greef. Mary Nighy (Industry, Say Nothing) and Ng Choon Ping (What It Feels Like for a Girl, Femme) are directing. The series is produced by Clerkenwell Films in partnership with BBC Studios Productions Australia.
The project marks another collaboration between Jackson and Clerkenwell, following Somewhere Boy, which earned a BAFTA TV Award nomination, and The Death of Bunny Munro. Breakers also reunites Clerkenwell with Netflix after the global success of the award-winning limited series Baby Reindeer.
Breakers is the first Netflix series to film in Western Australia and is supported by Screenwest and the Western Australian government through the state’s Production Attraction Incentive. The series will stream globally on Netflix and joins a growing slate of Australian-shot titles for the streamer, including The Survivors, Apple Cider Vinegar, Surviving Summer and upcoming projects such as Heartbreak High Season 3, My Brilliant Career and Allen.
Starr will next be seen reprising his role as Homelander in the fifth and final season of Prime Video’s The Boys, which premieres April 8. The performance has earned him two Critics Choice Award nominations. He recently wrapped production on Neon’s Samo Lives, in which he portrays Andy Warhol.
