Paramount is clearly in the mood to keep May spooky, because the studio has officially locked in a release date for the next Paranormal Activity movie. The untitled new entry in the long-running horror franchise will hit theaters on May 21, 2027, giving audiences yet another reason to sleep with the lights on.

Details about the plot are being kept tightly under wraps, but we do know a few key things. The film is being produced by James Wan, who is new to the Paranormal Activity universe but obviously no stranger to horror, and directed by Ian Tuason. The project comes from Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, with Jason Blum producing alongside Wan, while franchise creator Oren Peli returns as a producer through Solana Films. Paramount is co-producing and co-financing the film, continuing its long relationship with the franchise.

The upcoming movie will mark the eighth installment in a series that began back in 2007 with Peli’s ultra low-budget original. Shot for just $15,000, the first Paranormal Activity went on to gross an astonishing $194 million worldwide, becoming one of the most profitable movies ever made and helping to popularize the found-footage horror boom. Since then, the franchise has expanded with sequels including Paranormal Activity 2, 3, 4, The Marked Ones, The Ghost Dimension, and Next of Kin, with the series earning nearly $900 million globally.

Interestingly, May has quietly become a strong month for horror releases. Last year’s Final Destination: Bloodlines proved that spring scares can pay off in a big way, and studios seem eager to keep that momentum going. Wan himself has already teased his enthusiasm for the project, calling the original film’s slow-burn tension and ability to make the unseen terrifying a major inspiration. If that approach carries over, longtime fans may be in for a return to the franchise’s creepiest roots.

Whether this new chapter reinvents the formula or leans into what made Paranormal Activity so effective in the first place, one thing is certain: the franchise isn’t done haunting audiences just yet. And come May 2027, it looks like found-footage horror is ready to make us very uncomfortable all over again.

“I’ve been a huge admirer of Paranormal Activity since the brilliant first movie, with its creeping slow burn and subtle ability to make the unseen terrifying. I’m looking forward to expanding on its legacy and helping shape the next evolution of this scary found-footage franchise,” Wan last month when the film was announced.
