SUGARHILL DDOT GETS VULVERABLE ON “CONFESSIONS”
Today, Harlem rap sensation Sugarhill Ddot opens up a new chapter with the honest and introspective new single “Confessions,” out now via Priority Records. The melodic cut is a reminder of the 17-year-old star’s impressive range and emotionality — as well as his gift for hooks that stick around long after the song is over. Listen HERE and watch the music video HERE.
“Confessions” is wintry from the start, opening on eerie atmosphere, glowing melody, and chiming keys. As the trunk-rattling bass and snapping drums kick in, Sugarhill Ddot lets loose, pouring his heart out on the track: “Lately I been stressin’, going through depression, write out my confession … got nobody to talk to when I’m in my section, I can feel the tension, this s— just a lesson.” He splits the difference between bars and singing as he peels back the layers, ruminating on love, loss, personal challenges, and growth — and what it means to be taking care of the family that raised him now that he’s found success.
As Sugarhill Ddot wrote on socials, “I’m back. This is real pain. Sorry to all my fans — I love ya. I wanna apologize for my slack and not dropping for a whole year. This song right here gon’ tell ya why tho.”
Shot in Sugarhill Ddot’s native New York City, the “Confessions” music video finds him at familiar spots — a Harlem deli, the stoop of a nearby apartment building — but often all alone. That changes, however, when we see him seated at a concrete chess table across from a version of himself dressed in all black. The first Sugarhill Ddot expresses his vulnerability, but the second one dismisses him, underscoring his internal struggle to find peace in his city, as a member of a community, and as an artist sharing himself.
